Prescriptions

Non-urgent advice: Patient Notice

We are not a dispensing Practice and require 48 hours’ notice to write-up any prescription.

Ordering Repeat Prescriptions

Repeat prescriptions are medications which appear on your prescription slip which the doctor would like you to continue on a regular basis. Your list can also be found on your online account.

Please do not make an appointment with a Doctor for repeat prescriptions and allow sufficient time to order your prescription before your current medication runs out, especially on Public or Bank Holidays.

Patients on regular medication will require repeat prescriptions and for a safer and speedier service, repeat prescriptions are computerised.

Your doctor will have entered onto the computer what medication you are taking and each time a new prescription is produced on the computer a new request form is also generated for you to make your next request.

How to Request a Repeat Prescription

Repeat prescriptions may be ordered in 2 ways:

  • Fax
Patients may fax a prescription request to the surgery using fax number 0121 557 8707.
  • Phone
You may order a repeat prescription by telephone if you are on our housebound register, or have made prior arrangements with the surgery on (0121) 557 8707 between 9:00am – 11:30 and 4:00pm – 6:00pm.
  • In Person
Tick the boxes on your green repeat medication slip, OR, write a note stating what medications you would like and drop it off or post it to the surgery. Please only order medications that you need.

Collecting your Prescription

All prescriptions will be sent to your nominated pharmacy. If you do not have one nominated, then it will be automatically sent to your nearest chemist.

If you prefer, we can post the prescription back to you (you will need to provide a stamped, addressed envelope) or we can hand your prescription direct to one of the Chemists that collect prescriptions from us.

For some/few medications, the prescription must be printed off and taken to the pharmacy in person. You will always be notified if this is the case for your prescription.

Urgent Prescriptions

Due to an increasing number of requests for repeat prescriptions to be issued urgently, we have had to review how we handle these requests in order to provide safe and fair service to all our patients.

Most medications can safely be missed for a few days and you may be advised that your prescription will be issued routinely.

Alternatively, you can take your repeat prescription counterfoil to your usual pharmacy and they can issue you with a small quantity to tide you over until your repeat prescription is issued; there will be a charge for this.

We will not issue urgent prescriptions for items that can be bought over the counter.

If your medication cannot be missed, the item will be issued as required.

Non-urgent advice: Please Note

In order to ensure patient safety; we do not accept any requests for medication over the telephone. All urgent repeat prescriptions must be collected in person from the Practice.

Questions about your Prescription

If you have questions about your medication, your local pharmacists can answer your questions on prescription and over-the-counter medicines.

Repeat Prescription telephone queries should be made on 0121 557 8707.

Medication Reviews

If you have a repeat prescription, we will ask you to come in at least once a year for a review. Please make sure you book a routine appointment when we ask you to come in for your review.

You can do this in three ways.

  • Phone us Monday to Friday, from 10am to 6.30pm.
  • Visit the surgery and speak with a receptionist, Monday to Friday from 8am.

About Pharmacists

Pharmacists are experts in medicines who can help you with minor health concerns.

As qualified healthcare professionals, they can offer clinical advice and over-the-counter medicines for a range of minor illnesses, such as coughs, colds, sore throats, tummy trouble and aches and pains.

Many pharmacies are open until late and at weekends. You do not need an appointment.

Most pharmacies have a private consultation room where you can discuss issues with pharmacy staff without being overheard.

Disposing of Old Medicines

If your medicine is out of date, unwanted, or some of it is left over after you have stopped taking it, do not put it in your household bin or flush it down the toilet. Instead, take it to your pharmacy to be disposed of safely.

Over-the-counter medicines

Did you know that your local NHS spends £15m a year on prescribing medicines that are available to buy at the pharmacy?

Following national guidance from NHS England, our GPs are asked not to prescribe these medicines (there are some exceptions, see the below link), including for conditions such as coughs, colds, headaches, mouth ulcers, travel sickness and mild toothache.

Your GP will not generally give you a prescription for over-the-counter medicines for a range of minor health concerns. Instead, over-the-counter medicines are available to buy at your local pharmacy.
